When you became pregnant, you probably knew that morning sickness, tender breasts and fatigue might well come up and make things a little tricky. But what about swollen ankles, feet and fingers?

If you’ve noticed that your ankles look a little swollen or that your feet don’t easily fit into your shoes, you’re likely wondering - Are these normal pregnancy occurrences or are they something to be flagged with your midwife or doctor?

Are swollen ankles, feet and fingers normal during pregnancy?

It’s entirely normal for legs, feet, ankles and fingers to swell during pregnancy. The good news is that gradual swelling is neither harmful to you nor your baby. The bad news – it’s likely to be rather uncomfortable.

So, why does this swelling occur?

During pregnancy, your body holds more water than it did before, and if it’s a hot day or you’ve been standing for some time, this water will gather at the lowest parts of the body. What’s more, the pressure that the growing womb puts on your blood flow can also cause fluid to build up in your legs and ankles.

Now, while the knowledge that swelling is normal during pregnancy might make you feel a little better, it’s not going to ease any of the discomfort you’re feeling. So let’s explore a few ways in which you can reduce swelling.

How can I reduce and ease swelling?

Try not to stand for too long.

Wherever possible, rest with your feet up.

Make sure to get hold of some comfy shoes and socks, free of straps or tight elastic.

Drink lots and lots of water. Funnily enough, drinking more liquid helps your body to get rid of excess water.

If you’re able, get a little exercise each day. A walk will do you a world of good!

You can also partake in a couple of foot exercises, bending each foot up and down 30 times each or moving them in circles, 8 times in one direction and then 8 times in the other.

Now, earlier we mentioned that gradual swelling, while uncomfortable, is nothing to worry about, but what about sudden swelling?

When should I be concerned?

Sudden swelling could indicate pre-eclampsia, a condition that causes high blood pressure and should be monitored as soon as possible. If you notice any of the signs listed below, call your doctor or midwife immediately.

Increased swelling in your face, hands or feet that happens very suddenly.

A very painful headache.

Severe pain just below the ribs.

Blurry vision.

Vomiting, if it comes with any of the other symptoms.
