Whilst pregnant, you were always very careful to avoid eating sushi and well aware that it’s considered unsafe for the growing baby. But now that your little one has finally arrived and doing their best to get used to this strange world they’ve entered, you wonder whether sushi is still considered unsafe while breastfeeding.

Is it safe to eat sushi when breastfeeding?

If you’re a sushi lover, you’ll be happy to know that sushi can be put back on the menu! Now, you’ll still need to eat it in moderation, and you’ll need to be careful to avoid high-mercury fish, but yes, breastfeeding mothers can safely eat sushi.

As a great source of essential vitamins and lean protein, the right types of sushi certainly will offer you and your baby health benefits. But what else does fish provide?

Omega-3 fatty acids. Many different types of fish (including salmon, sardines, and herring) are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which are hugely important for your baby’s brain and eye development and nervous system.

Micronutrients. On top of being a great source of protein and healthy fats, fish also contain certain micronutrients, such as vitamin D, which are essential for bone development in babies. Vitamin D also helps prevent rickets (a condition that leads to weak and soft bones). Alongside vitamin D, fish provide vitamin B12, a nutrient that supports brain development and keeps the body’s blood and nerve cells healthy. Both transfer to a baby through breast milk.

But are there any risks of eating sushi while breastfeeding?

Mercury. As you may well know, some fish, such as swordfish, fresh tuna, and yellowtail, contain high levels of mercury, which can harm babies in utero and in early life outside of the womb. Therefore, it’s safest to avoid these particular fish.

Food poisoning. Unfortunately, if raw fish isn’t handled correctly, it can sometimes lead to food poisoning. Now, while bacteria and parasites don’t pass through breast milk – so you won’t need to worry about your baby – food poisoning can be a bit of an ordeal. So, go for trusted establishments with high ratings and very good food standards.
