If it’s been pureed, corn is considered safe for babies six months and older. In fact, corn offers many benefits for your little one. Not only is it delicious, it’s also full of vitamins and minerals, including essential B vitamins, iron, fibre, zinc, and potassium, all of which support your baby’s growth and development. And though corn allergies are very rare, it’s good to introduce it early and know sooner rather than later if your child has an intolerance, simply because corn is present in many products.

But are there any potential risks of feeding my baby corn?

The only thing you need to be careful of when feeding your baby corn is its consistency. Larger corn pieces that need chewing could pose a choking hazard, so make sure to puree or mash the corn you serve your baby.

And bear in mind that popcorn is a little too big for babies and toddlers. Hold off on introducing popcorn until your child is at least four-years-old.

So, when and how can I introduce corn?

When it comes to introducing corn, ensure your baby is old enough and ready to begin eating solids, and then follow the same rules with any other food. Namely, introducing it on its own for a few days to identify a potential allergy or sensitivity. A 6-month-old baby won’t need much more than a couple of tablespoons of pureed corn a day, alongside breast milk or formula, but this can gradually be increased as your baby gets older (2-4 tablespoons for a 7-month-old, 4-6 for an 8-month-old, and so on).

However, remember that all babies are unique, so gauge and respond to their reactions.
