The Nintendo Switch is a brilliant device for keeping your little ones entertained. But you want to ensure they're not accidentally making purchases or playing games unsuitable for them. The Nintendo Switch has a robust parental control system to ensure your little one is not accessing content that may be considered inappropriate for their age.

First, you must make a family account. This will create distinct accounts: one for you and one for your child. There can be up to 8 accounts in one family account.

Here’s how to do this:

Create/log-in to your Nintendo account here: Create a Nintendo Account
Click the “Family Group” tab on the left-hand side of the page. This will allow you to create your child’s account and set their age limit.

Once done, you can set restrictions on your child’s account:

Click Family group.

A list of all supervised accounts in the family group will appear on the screen. Click the Nintendo Account where you want to manage restrictions.

Click each setting that you want to adjust:

Spending/Purchases on Nintendo Switch eShop and the Nintendo website:

Check the box to disable purchases and auto-renewal options on Nintendo Switch AND through the Online Game Store.

Viewing of content on Nintendo Switch eShop:

Check Restrict to restrict the content that can be seen on the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch. Content will automatically be restricted based on the player’s age.

Click Save changes to confirm the change.

Now your child won’t be able to purchase anything on the Nintendo eShop without your permission, and will be blocked from seeing any age-inappropriate content.

What else can I do?

You can also download the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls App. This connects your phone to your Switch! You can monitor your child’s playtime, limit screen time and choose what games to play.

Here’s how you can access it:

Install the Parental Controls app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Launch the app and log in to your Nintendo Account.

When prompted to enter a code, pick up your Switch console.

Navigate to System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Control Settings > I have the app installed, what’s next?

Enter the code from your phone, tap OK, then Register.

You might be prompted to create a PIN. Memorise it or write it down in a secure place.
