In part 1 of this article, we explored a few fun and unique ways to help your child develop their spelling skills, and though the list was quite extensive, we have even more activities coming up!

Some of the following games will involve the use of a computer or phone to mix things up a little but remember, you don’t need to use every suggestion, just the ones that appeal to you and those you think your child will enjoy.

So, let’s get right down to it and find out how else you can help your child work on their spelling.

How do I help my child with their spelling skills at home?

Window writing. Now, we know that this already sounds like it may get a little messy, but so long as you’re using window-safe crayons (which can be found on the internet or in high street stores), this activity is super educational and a lot of fun. And it’s really rather simple! Just have your kids write out their spelling as neatly and colourfully as they can and then have them help you wash it all off. They might also like to draw a few corresponding pictures which will help the spellings stick!

Word rainbows. All you’ll need for this one is some bright colours and a large piece of paper, and then it’s really as simple as encouraging your kids to write out their spelling in every colour under the sun to create word rainbows.

Paint your words. Again, the idea here is to simply introduce a new and creative way to write out all sorts of words, but if you want to make things a little more complicated, have your child match a significant colour to the word they’re painting.

The following activities involve the use of a computer or another electronic device:

Type it out. If you have a computer or tablet handy, put up a word or google docs page and have your child type up the words you shout out to them. Just make sure to choose a bright colour and funny font to keep things interesting!

Record your spellings. Set your phone up to record your child as they spell out loud. They’ll love listening to their voice, especially if you encourage them to put on a silly one.

Video record. Recording a spelling film will work even better if you can get them to dress up in a funny outfit and do a little dance as they spell out their words. The sillier the better!

Karaoke. Help your little one make up short and snappy songs that spell out new words. If you are struggling to come up with a melody, set the letters to memorable nursery rhymes.

Fun spelling websites:

Puzzlemaker. Sites like ‘Puzzlemaker’ jumble the words your child enters and place them in a word search for them to find.

Let them sing it. ‘Let Them Sing It’ is a fun, interactive site that lets your child type in different words, only for them to be sung straight back to them! This will really help when it comes to memorising words.

Spelling City. ‘SpellingCity’ has it all! Your child can play games that help them to learn their words of the week, and then take a test to see how much they’ve learnt. This is a really fun, educational tool your kids will love.

Note: Remember to make sure that your child isn’t on screens excessively. Even if it’s for educational purposes, spending too much time on screens can still affect them negatively.
