Have patience

The biological changes you’re experiencing are completely normal and are your brain’s way of adapting. While the effects can be somewhat annoying, remember, this is nature’s way of helping you be the best mom you can be. Let yourself off the hook. You’re going to make mistakes, and that’s OK. It’s more than OK.

Make lists

The best way to deal with the forgetfulness that comes with “mummy brain” is to make lots of lists. Keep a pad and pen with you everywhere you go, or jot down things to remember on your phone. When you think of something you need to do, jot it down. You can also set reminders on your phone for the moment you remember something you need to do or buy for the baby. The key is to do it the moment you think of it, even if you’re in mid-conversation. Just politely apologise and say that it’s important for you to make a note of something so you don’t forget.

Plan ahead

If you know you have an important appointment the next day, pack what you need the night before. Try to keep all of your important items in the same place. You could have a little bowl by the door or in the kitchen where you put your keys and wallet. Create a ritual around putting your keys and wallet in the same place, so you’ll always know where to find them. There’s nothing worse than running around like a headless chicken searching for your keys when you’re late for an appointment!

Ask for support.

Becoming a mom can be one of the most challenging times in a woman’s life and can feel totally overwhelming. Ask your partner to support you as much as you can. And if your friends and family live close by, ask them for support too. When you’re feeling particularly frazzled, ask your partner or someone to come around to give you a break.

Get plenty of rest and time for yourself.

Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest reasons for forgetfulness. Your brain needs rest to process new information; hence, you experience brain fog when you’re not getting adequate sleep. If you and your partner are able, take turns feeding the baby through the night, or if you’re breastfeeding, ask your partner to change the diaper first.

As hard as it can be for moms to get even a second to themselves, try at least to aim for an uninterrupted shower every day. Try to disconnect from the endless mommy responsibilities, even if it’s just for a moment.

Boost your brain health.

There are plenty of brain-supporting foods to help boost your brain health. Magnesium supplements can be particularly helpful.
