If you have any of the following signs that labour may be starting or is likely to start before 37 weeks of pregnancy, it’s important to seek medical advice right away. Experiencing one or more of these signs and symptoms does not necessarily mean that preterm labour is occurring, but it’s still important to get them properly checked out.

A show (pink or brown mucus discharge)

During pregnancy, your cervix is blocked by a mucus plug that prevents bacteria from reaching your baby. If you notice a pink or brown jelly-like discharge, this may be a mucus plug coming away and can be a sign that labour may start soon.

Your waters are breaking (rupture of the amniotic membranes surrounding your baby). You may notice a slow trickle of liquid and wonder whether you’ve wet yourself, or you may experience a gush of fluid. Either way, you should always check with your midwife or doctor if you think the amniotic sac has ruptured.

Regular contractions

One of the most significant signs of preterm labour is regular contractions that occur before the 37th week of pregnancy. Contractions may be painful or may feel like a tightening sensation in the abdomen. Unlike Braxton-Hicks contractions (practice contractions), which are irregular and generally painless, contractions associated with preterm labour occur at regular intervals and become progressively stronger.

You should also seek urgent medical advice if you experience any of the signs listed below. They may not mean you are in labour, but they may indicate there is a problem and should be checked immediately.

Lower abdominal pain

A feeling of increased pressure in the pelvic area or lower abdomen can be a sign of preterm labour. It may feel like the baby is pushing down or that there is heaviness in the pelvic region.

Pelvic Pain

Preterm labour may be accompanied by pelvic pain or a sensation of pressure in the pelvic region. The pain can range from mild to severe and may be constant or intermittent.

Lower back pain

Persistent lower back pain that may be dull or throbbing can be a sign of preterm labour. This pain may radiate to the lower abdomen or hips.

A bad headache or visual disturbances

Flu-like symptoms

Some women may experience flu-like symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, or vomiting before preterm labour begins. These symptoms may be accompanied by a general feeling of unease or illness.

Experiencing one or more of these signs and symptoms does not always mean you’re going into labour prematurely. However, please be sure to get checked out by your doctor or midwife as soon as possible.
