Stand or hop on one leg

Asking your child to stand – or hop – on one leg can be helpful for developing balance. You should teach them to look straight ahead to help them balance – they’ll need to do this when cycling! See how long they can stand on one leg for! Or can they hop on a precise spot without moving off it? Remember to get them switching between legs when practising!

Hop with both feet together

Carry out a simple game where your child hops with both feet together like a frog or a kangaroo! You can make this fun by drawing lines or crosses on the ground using chalk and asking your child to jump over the lines, or onto a particular spot. This simple activity can be helpful for teaching your child the movement that they will use when scooting and gliding along on their bike! Getting them to bend their knees when they land from each hop will also simulate the movement that they’ll need when riding standing up!

Then practise passing items to each other by turning your hips whilst staying seated. This can be a helpful exercise as it simulates a similar movement to when your child is cycling – such as when they will look behind properly by turning to the side by rotating their hips!
