While pregnancy is an amazing thing, there’s simply no denying the fact that it is difficult! On top of swollen ankles, there’s a strong possibility of morning sickness, fatigue and more.

However, since your body will go through quite the ordeal, we want your mind to feel as close to normal as possible. Now, given that you’ll experience a rush of pregnancy hormones, this is easier said than done. But, if we can take you through some of the common health problems that pregnant women will often experience and how to cope with these issues, at least you’ll feel reassured, equipped and less bamboozled should they occur!

So, let’s get right into it and explore some of the common difficulties that may arise during pregnancy!

What are the common health issues that may arise during pregnancy?

Before we delve in, we just want to remind you that these issues aren’t definite during pregnancy and that there’s almost always a solution.

Constipation. Constipation is especially common during the first months of pregnancy but it is fairly easy to prevent and ease. Make sure to eat plenty of fibre-rich foods (fruit, veg and wholemeal options), drink lots of water, exercise a little each day and avoid iron supplements.

Feeling faint. Due to certain hormonal changes, many soon-to-be mothers will often feel faint. To avoid any accidents, always stand up slowly after sitting or lying down, make sure to find a seat as soon as possible if you’re feeling a little off and try to always lie on your side.

Cramps. A cramp is a sharp and instant pain that is generally felt in the lower legs or feet. Regular exercise that keeps the feet and legs moving should help to prevent cramps, while rotating your feet several times, bending them up and down and rubbing the affected muscle will help to ease cramp when it occurs.

Feeling hot. Due to hormonal changes and an increase in blood supply to the skin, most women sweat more during pregnancy and report feeling hot. To combat this, keep your house and bedroom cool with fans or air conditioning and wear loose clothes made from natural fibres.

Incontinence and needing to pee a lot. Before and after you’ve given birth, there’s a chance you’ll accidentally pee a little if you laugh or cough suddenly, or even whilst getting from one position to another. This is entirely normal but it can be a little uncomfortable or even embarrassing. However, incontinence is usually curable, thanks to pelvic floor exercises; so speak to your midwife or doctor. In the meantime, some women wear pads that can help to absorb any fluids. Similarly, you will likely find that you need to pee a lot during and after your pregnancy. If you find that you need to pee during the night, try to cut down on liquids just before bed but make sure to drink plenty of water during the day. If you notice blood in your urine or you’re experiencing a burning sensation when you pee, make sure to see your doctor as you may have an infection.

Varicose veins. Varicose veins are veins that appear swollen and prominent. They usually affect the legs though they may sometimes appear around the vaginal opening (these will generally get better after birth). While varicose veins are uncomfortable, they’re not harmful to you or your baby. However, if you do notice them, there are certain things you can do:

Avoid standing for too long.

Avoid crossing your legs when you’re sitting.

Try compression tights; sold at most pharmacies.

Place a pillow under your feet as you sleep to elevate the legs and ease symptoms.

Stay active. Walking and swimming are particularly good for varicose veins.
