In part one, we explained the difference between a planned and emergency procedure and how the doctor assesses the urgency using a categorised scheme.

We also explained the importance of giving your consent prior to a caesarean being carried out, as well as what happens when you meet with the anaesthetist.

In part two, we are going to explain what you will likely experience during a caesarean section operation, so you know what to expect if you decide (or have been advised) to have one.

So, what happens during a caesarean?

Before the operation, a drip will be connected to your hand or arm. This is for fluids and medications to be given intravenously, if necessary.
If you have any pubic hair on your tummy, this will need to be clipped down to 3cm in preparation for the cut.
Once you’re pain-free from the anaesthetic, a catheter will be inserted into your bladder and will stay in until the procedure is finished and sensation is recovered.
Your tummy will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution, and a screen will be placed over you so you will not be able to see the operation.
A 10cm (4 inch) horizontal cut will be made along your bikini line. Although rare, the cut could also be made vertically from your belly button down.
Pressure is put on your bladder, and your uterus is opened so that the doctor can see the baby. Your waters will be broken—if they haven’t already—before the baby and placenta can be delivered.
After releasing the head from the pelvic brim, the surgeon will lift the baby out. Assistance may be needed to put pressure on the uterus while the baby is being lifted out.
The umbilical cord is then cut, and initial checks are done on your baby. You and your partner will then be able to hold your baby while the rest of the operation is completed.
You will be given an injection of syntometrine to help deliver the placenta. The uterus and tummy wall will then be stitched up, which takes about half an hour. If you’ve had previous operations, this could take longer.
You will either have dissolvable stitches or stitches that have to be taken out a few days later. Your doctor usually decides which stitches to use, but if you have a preference, make sure you let the doctor know before you have the operation.
