It is therefore important for parents to understand the causes, risks, and some prevention strategies for these problems.

Causes of excessive weight gain in toddlers.

Toddlers may be overweight or obese for genetic reasons. A lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits can exacerbate genetic causes or be the reasons a child is excessively heavy all by themselves. A sedentary lifestyle, combined with too much screen time and consuming too many high-calorie foods and drinks, can put a toddler at a higher risk of becoming overweight or obese, for example.

Health risks for overweight or obese toddlers.

A child who is overweight or obese is at greater risk of type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. They may also develop social and emotional problems like low self-esteem and depression.

Preventing excessive weight gain in toddlers.

Promoting healthy eating habits and regular physical activities are the two most important ways parents can prevent toddlers from becoming overweight or obese. You should offer a variety of nutritious foods, keep them from getting high-calorie snacks or sugary drinks, and encourage them to get active at playtimes. Children under five should have at least three hours of physical activity through play. Modelling good physical and eating habits yourself will benefit your child.

Treating an obese or overweight toddler.

If your child is overweight or obese already, you should work with your doctor to develop a plan for weight management. Change your toddler’s diet and physical activity level. Monitor their growth and development. A referral to an endocrinologist or dietitian may be necessary in some cases.
