The first few days after birth are dependent on what kind of birth you had: home birth vs. giving birth in a hospital, epidural vs. natural, caesarean section vs. vaginal, and medical complications vs. none. But even though the days following birth can differ greatly in many ways, there are still some physical experiences that affect most women—for example, the emotional rollercoaster of attempting to breastfeed (or deciding not to).

Many women report feeling completely underprepared for what their bodies go through in the first few days after birth. Research suggests that the main reason for this is that women feel like their bodily experiences would be too graphic to share with other people. We believe that the more people who share their experiences pre- and post-birth, the more prepared women will feel.

So, let’s take a look at what you may be experiencing a few days post-birth.

Pain and recovery

Even after a labour with no tearing, episiotomy, or other complications, most women experience some physical pain or discomfort in the few days following.

For some women, taking pain relief or medication is something they wish to avoid, preferring more holistic approaches to healing. But if the pain of recovery is uncomfortable, there is no shame in taking the prescribed medication. If you are at all concerned about the medication, you can ask your doula, midwife, or doctor for advice.

Breastfeeding

Whether you’re adjusting to breastfeeding or you’ve decided not to, the first few days after birth can be emotionally challenging.

While some women feel empowered and satisfied during breastfeeding, others can find it frustrating and painful. And, of course, not all women can or want to breastfeed, which can bring up feelings of shame, especially when speaking to other breastfeeding women.

While many organisations promote breastfeeding in the first 6 months, women who have chosen not to breastfeed should know that formula is absolutely fine to give your baby. If you’re having difficulty getting your baby to suckle or it feels too painful, then supplementing them with formula can be the healthiest choice for your baby.

Another benefit of not breastfeeding is that someone other than you can feed your baby. This means you can get better rest throughout the night, which is important to your physical, psychological, and emotional health.
