You’ve got your child set up with a variety of activities that each encourage development in different areas. You’re confident their language skills will be great, and their fine motor skills are coming along nicely. But what about music and movement? Do you need to be a musical person for your child to appreciate music? Why is this in its own separate category of activities?

But before you go through music catalogues wondering if your toddler needs to be able to play Beethoven flawlessly, consider starting with a few easier activities!

Everyone needs to move, and it’s a lot more fun if it’s to a beat! Exploring sounds and music help introduce your little one to a world of creativity and curiosity.

Even if they never end up learning an instrument, or becoming a world-class dancer, all toddlers benefit from being introduced to the world of music from an early age. You don’t need to be able to sing or dance well to have fun either!

So, what kind of musical instruments can my toddler use?

Many childcare stores and retailers offer bright, child-friendly versions of instruments that are easy to use! Let’s have a look at some now:

Maracas, tambourines, gourds, and shakers are all good examples of instruments that shake. Your child can experiment with how hard they shake them, and how fast. A rainmaker is a great instrument to use as well.

Instruments that can be struck with a stick or hammer provide hours of entertainment whilst helping your child understand the amount of force needed to make a nice sound. These instruments include xylophones, drums, or a set of blocks.

Harmonicas and recorders are instruments that you can blow into. They are great for teaching your child about breath control, as well as hand coordination.

Music boxes are a fun activity. Turning the handle helps children with their hand coordination, and they’ll watch on with glee as the beautiful melodies sound!

Listening to music can be its own activity! Try to find an old CD player, as your child can then select their own tunes. If you have a mat to roll out for dancing, that’s even better! It can help the child transition to dancing time! There are plenty of CDs and playlists that cater specifically to children.

There are lots of concerts and live performances that cater specifically to young children. Consider taking your little one to a concert as a special treat or birthday present!

What about movement activities?

As well as dancing like there’s no tomorrow, there are plenty of movement activities that can keep your child engaged throughout the day, all while developing their locomotive skills:

Running, jumping, skipping, and hopping are all great physical activities that your child can learn to do. Pair this with music, so they get even more enjoyment out of it!

If you feel your child has developed enough, consider a small tricycle or push-bike. This sense of freedom can be empowering to many toddlers.

Playing outside encourages movement at every opportunity! Visit a playground, or simply go for a walk through the park. Your child benefits in so many ways by exploring the great outdoors. Not only are they developing their motor skills, but they’re also expanding their outlook on the world and nature.
