Prevention is better than cure, so try to ameliorate relationship struggles before the baby arrives, says Unii expert Natalie Mossayebi.

In a recent episode of the Unii Babies podcast, relationship coach Natalie Mossayebi explains what can happen when the stress of dealing with a newborn highlights and exacerbates problems between the parents. While you can’t prepare for every problem you’ll encounter on your parenting journey, when it comes to your relationship, Natalie believes prevention is far better than cure.

“Having a baby amplifies a lot of underlying things that are potentially not spoken about. So to mitigate against challenges, I would really recommend that couples have regular check-ins before a baby arrives so you can plan and ensure you’ve been through anything that might cause problems. It also means that you can say, you know, when this happens, this might happen. When the baby comes, this might happen. And how do we navigate that as a couple? Just dissolve all the shame around the negative emotions that might arise and anything else one might feel. It’s natural and normal to feel uncertain, and there is beauty in the transition, but it is important to have that awareness of what the unit [the relationship] is before the baby arrives.” Natalie gives practical advice for strengthening your post-baby relationship, including creating a relationship agreement, which can help you set goals and prioritise time together as a couple, on her Unii Love, Sex, and Parenting Journey.
