Nappy rash is typically caused by urine being broken down by the bacteria in your baby’s poo. This forms ammonia, which can burn your baby’s skin and make it red, sore, and even bleed. Because your baby is constantly pooing at this stage in their life, they are most exposed to nappy rash. The good news is that modern disposable nappies are super absorbent, which means they feel dryer on the surface after a baby has peed, and nappy rash is now less of a problem.

How can I prevent nappy rash in my baby?

As the weeks go on and your baby poos less frequently, your baby’s nappy rash should subside. However, there are also ways to prevent this issue.

Change your baby’s nappy on a frequent basis. Also, try to change them as soon as they have done a poo.

Clean your baby using cotton, wool, and water, or baby wipes for sensitive skin. If you opt for baby wipes, then look out for ones that don’t contain alcohol or fragrance.

Be meticulous about drying your baby’s bottom. This is to make sure that they are as dry as possible when you put another nappy on. You could use a hairdryer, a face cloth, or cotton wool to ensure this.

Use a barrier cream, spray, lotion, or ointment if your baby is particularly prone to nappy rash. This will give you more time between each nappy rash and will also delay ammonia from reaching your baby’s skin.

How can I treat nappy rash in my baby?

Use an antiseptic barrier cream such as Sudocrem or Drapolene. You should use this at the first sign of nappy rash if your baby is particularly prone to it. Remember when applying the cream that it’s better to do so sparingly and only use a thin layer rather than slather it on.

Let your baby go without a nappy for as long as possible. This is so that their skin can get as much air as possible (a couple of hours is best), as this will be good for treating the rash.
