Timing is key

First things first, timing is everything. You've got to pick the right moment to start. Make sure to consider developmental readiness, as described in the previous episode. Starting when your toddler’s motor, physical, communication, cognitive, behavioural, and emotional readiness are on point is a game-changer.

Early exposure to your family’s bathroom routine is also extremely helpful. Let your little one observe and even participate in daily bathroom activities to build comfort and confidence.

Create a supportive environment

This environment grows from a consistent routine for using the toilet. Encourage your child to sit on the potty or toilet at regular times, like after meals or waking up, to reinforce the habit. Next, shower your child with praise and rewards for their efforts in the WC. Cheers, stickers, or treats can turn the experience into something enjoyable. Conversely, when accidents happen, try to be patient and remember that these are part of how toddlers learn. Stay calm, and avoid punishing or shaming them.

Introduce the potty

Now, what’s the best way to introduce your toddler to the potty? Start by choosing the right kind. Go for a comfy potty chair that your toddler can easily sit on and feel secure in. Letting them decorate it with stickers might make it less intimidating to look at. Remember, you are your child’s greatest teacher, so show him or her how to use the potty by demonstrating the process. You could also involve an older sibling as a positive example. Make sure to repeatedly encourage your child to sit on the potty when they're likely to need it. Gentle reminders and routines help them develop good habits.

Communication

Let's dive into some helpful communication strategies. Keep your language clear and ensure your child has the right vocabulary—words like pee, poo, potty, wet, dry, pants, "big girl/boy," etc. Encourage them to use these terms to express their needs. It’s also important that your child feels comfortable discussing bodily functions generally. Encourage them to communicate their needs and emotions surrounding toileting. Say, "Let me know when you have to use the toilet, especially when we're not at home."

Consistency

Consistency is your ally. Set out clear expectations and rules about toilet training. Ensure that all caregivers are on the same page and follow the established routine. Remember to anticipate setbacks and accidents. Stay positive, patient, and persistent. Keep reinforcing the desired behaviour and providing support to your toddler when needed.

Transition to underwear

Finally, here's how to make the transition to underwear smooth: make the change a celebration! Involve your child in choosing their underwear; make it exciting and empowering. Keep spare clothes and cleaning supplies to hand just in case. If accidents happen, respond calmly, clean up together, and remind your child about using the potty next time.
