But what is a natal tooth?

While most babies see their first teeth come through at about 6 months old, a natal tooth is a tooth a baby is born with.

Most natal teeth will appear on the lower gum line and will look underdeveloped, cone-like in shape, and discoloured. Given that most parents won’t expect to see any teeth on their newborn baby, it can come as quite a shock and even give rise to feelings of concern. However, if a natal tooth truly is a cause for concern, a paediatrician will suggest the relevant treatment.

So when might a natal tooth be cause for concern?

Complications are generally very rare, but there are one or two instances where a natal tooth might require treatment of some kind or another. These include a loose natal tooth (as the baby may accidentally swallow the tooth), feeding issues (as the tooth may cause a nursing parent pain), and injuries to a baby’s tongue (if the tooth is especially sharp).

If your baby is born with a natal tooth, there’s generally nothing to worry about, but it will need to be cared for as you would any other tooth, with regular check-ups and brushing. If complications do arise, which is rare, try not to worry, as there are relatively simple treatments available.
