You know grammar and syntax are vital; just think how frustrating it is to receive messages or see social media posts written in pidgin English. Expressing yourself correctly is, in part, a reflection of how you were raised, so it’s no wonder that parents are eager to have their toddler learn proper grammar and syntax.

That’s true, but what is grammar, exactly?

Grammar is a set of rules for using words. It includes rules for verb tenses, sentence structure, and more. One fundamental rule of English grammar, for example, is that we typically use a subject-verb-object sentence structure (e.g., The dog chased the ball).

And what is syntax?

Syntax is the study of the sentence structure I just mentioned and many others, as well as how words are arranged to create meaning. It includes understanding the rules for word order, sentence length, and punctuation. As another example, we also use subject-verb-adjective-noun structures in English (e.g., The happy dog chased the ball).

Why is syntax important for my toddler’s language development?

Good syntax will help your child articulate their thoughts and ideas correctly. When you understand and follow the rules of syntax, your sentences make complete sense. It will also help your child with reading and comprehension tests in later life.

Great, so how can I help my child develop good grammar and syntax?

Here are four simple ways:

Speak in complete sentences.

Try to use full, grammatically correct sentences when you’re around your child. They can still be quite simple; they just need to be right. This helps them grasp proper sentence structure and grow their vocabulary.

Keep sentence structures simple.

Now is not the time to extend your sentences with multiple clauses. Simple structures are easier for your child to understand and imitate. Avoid complex sentences with grammar or syntax that they won’t understand. This is alienating, even for older children.

Read books with proper grammar and syntax.

It may seem obvious, but the books you read to your child should be written with proper grammar and syntax. Choose texts with simple language and clear sentence structures, and point these out to your child as you read.

Play sentence-building games.

Can you think of a sentence-building game that would teach your child grammar and syntax? You could probably make one up over breakfast. For example, if your child says “more” while holding an empty juice glass, build upon and rephrase it so it becomes, '”More juice, please, mummy”. Then you can narrate to expand on the point: “You want more juice." “I am going to pour the juice." “I’m pouring the juice.” This will help your toddler practice sentence structure and vocabulary using real-world examples.
