The first thing to recognise is that not being an expert at changing nappies is nothing to be ashamed of. Like all new skills, it’s something you have to practice and learn.

The best way to think about changing a nappy is to do it step-by-step. This way, you will be able to remember what you have to do more easily, and over time, it will be something you do without thinking.

Step 1: To begin with, gently lie your baby down on a clean, soft surface, like a towel. Then take off their dirty or wet nappy. Ensure the dirty nappy goes in your general waste bin, not your recycling bin. There will probably be some excess poo on your baby, so use the dirty nappy to wipe this off too. While doing this, it will be helpful and more practical if you gently raise their bottom by holding one of their ankles up with your hand. Then, wash the bottom and genitals from front to back with cotton wool that has been dipped in warm water. Finally, pat them dry with a muslin or soft towel.

Step 2: Once your baby is clean and dry, the next step is to slide the back half of a new, clean nappy under their bottom. Again, while you are doing this, make sure to hold their ankles up for practicality.

Step 3: Then, continue to fold the top half of the nappy up onto your baby’s tummy. It should be able to be secured using the sticky pads on the bottom bit. Remember, the sticky pads should be on your baby’s tummy. There is a chance that you could have accidentally put the nappy on backwards; however, try not to be too worried about this. The goal is to get the nappy on during the first few times you practice. Besides, when your midwife comes, she will be able to tell you whether it is on correctly or not.

Step 4: If your baby happens to do a poo just as you’ve put a nappy on, try to be patient. This is very common and simply means you will have to start again. However, if this doesn’t happen, you are free to wash your hands.

Step 5: Congratulate yourself! You successfully changed a nappy!
