Here’s how to use an automated external defibrillator, or AED.

AEDs are portable electronic devices designed to analyse the heart's rhythm and deliver a shock if needed. To use an AED, first turn it on and follow the audio or visual prompts. Attach the pads to the child's chest.

For a child aged 1–7, that is, under the age of 8, we would ideally use paediatric pads.

These are placed on the front and back centres of the chest, as shown on the diagrams on the pads.

If there are only adult pads available, then you can use them; however, please remember to use them in the same position as you would if they were padded pads: front and back centre chest.

If the child is 8 or older, the pads can be used as an adult.

If the device detects a shockable rhythm, the AED will instruct you to deliver a shock.

You need to be aware that it will only deliver a shock if a shockable heart rhythm is detected; it will not deliver a shock if a non-shockable rhythm is detected; this obviously includes a healthy heart rhythm. This is what makes public use of AEDs completely safe—you cannot accidentally shock anyone with a healthy heart rhythm.

After a shock has been delivered, the AED will advise either to begin CPR (in this case, then recommence CPR) or, if needed, to begin CPR. If it says, if needed, do another 10-second breathing check, and if no normal breathing is detected, continue with CPR until help arrives or the person shows signs of consciousness or breathing.

The faster we use an AED, the greater their chances of survival.
