As we mentioned in Part 1 of this article, many women opt for natural methods of pain relief during labour. We previously explored methods such as staying active, relaxation techniques, TENS, self-hypnosis, and giving birth in warm water.

Now let’s look at some other natural options you may like to consider to support natural labour.

What other natural methods are available to me?

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles placed on strategic points on your body to reduce pain by stimulating endorphins. This ancient Chinese medicine is used to unblock stuck energy, or “chi”, which is believed to relieve pain and restore balance in the body. Many women use acupuncture to treat mild pregnancy symptoms as well as during labour. It is completely safe for you and the baby, and the needles will be inserted into points that do not restrict your movement. When looking for an acupuncturist, look for one who specialises in this area and arrange to have them with you during labour.

Massage and touch

Many women find it very soothing to receive a massage during labour, which is a great way to relieve pain. Ideally, your birth partner will have learned a few techniques, either from your midwife or during antenatal classes, that they can practice before labour. Massaging the lower back really helps to relieve pain in that area. Massaging the head, neck, and shoulders can also help to relieve tension and fatigue. There are other touch therapies that can be beneficial, such as shiatsu and acupressure, which involve applying pressure to specific points to release endorphins. Ask your midwife to put you in touch with a practitioner who will be able to teach you or your partner about these points.

Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy is a complementary therapy based on the theory of treating “like with like” and stimulates the body’s natural healing responses to heal itself. There are various homoeopathic remedies that are safe to use during pregnancy and labour. Although there is a lack of scientific evidence on the effectiveness of homoeopathy, many women report finding the remedies helpful.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment that uses essential oils derived from plants that promote health and wellbeing. The therapeutic properties help to stimulate, soothe, and refresh you and your partner during labour. There is some evidence to show how lavender, in particular, has the ability to reduce anxiety during labour. The relaxation effects of the oils, therefore, reduce the pain of labour significantly. Some midwives are trained in aromatherapy; ask your maternity unit if they have this service available or if they could pass on details of any qualified aromatherapists in your local area.

Reflexology

Reflexology involves using reflex points on the feet that correspond with different parts of your body to improve circulation and relieve tension. Many women report that reflexology allows them to feel more relaxed in the early stages of labour. However, if you would like to move around and be more active during labour, this is not a very practical option and is instead suited in between early contractions.
