Our little ones are naturally drawn to water, so let's equip ourselves with essential tips to keep them safe. In this article, we’ll look into child water safety.

Supervise constantly

Never leave a toddler unattended near water. Maintain constant, vigilant supervision, even if your child is wearing flotation devices or seems comfortable in the water. Frighteningly, drowning can happen in seconds.

Secure barriers

Install proper barriers around pools and jacuzzis. Fences should be at least four feet high, have self-closing and self-latching gates, and be inaccessible for your child. Remove any objects near the fence that could be used to climb over it.

Pool safety

If you have a pool, follow additional safety measures. Cover the pool when it's not in use, and use safety covers that can support the weight of a child. Empty any buckets, inflatable pools, or containers of water immediately after use.

Teach basic water safety

As soon as your child is developmentally ready, teach them basic water safety rules. Emphasise the importance of not entering the water without adult supervision, and explain why they should never run or push others near the water.

Learn CPR

Knowing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a valuable skill that can save a life in the event of a water-related emergency. Take a CPR course specifically designed for infants and children to learn the proper techniques. Keep emergency numbers and instructions near the pool or water area.

Swimming lessons

Sign your toddler up for age-appropriate swim lessons taught by certified instructors. While swim lessons don't drown-proof a child, they can teach basic water skills and increase their comfort in the water. However, remember that lessons are not a substitute for supervision.

Water safety devices

Use approved flotation devices, such as life jackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs), when your child is near water. Ensure the devices are properly fitted and designed for your child's weight and size. Again, flotation devices can never replace direct supervision.

Drain safety

Be cautious of pool drains, which can pose entrapment hazards. Ensure the drains have proper covers that comply with safety standards.

Educate others

Ensure that all caregivers, family members, and anyone responsible for your toddler's well-being are aware of water safety practices and the importance of constant supervision.

Be prepared

Have essential water safety equipment readily available, such as reaching or throwing devices, a first aid kit, and a phone for emergencies. Learn and perfect rescue techniques if needed.
