During their first few weeks in this world, your baby was a pooper trooper, getting through 11 or so nappies a day! But recently their pooping has slowed down rather a lot, and now it can take up to three whole days before they fill their nappy. Yes, this means you have to deal with fewer smelly nappies, and that’s a huge plus, but should you be concerned by this change? Is not pooping for three days normal?

Well, let’s look at the general poop expectations of babies and find out!

What are normal poop expectations for babies?

During those first six weeks or so, babies really should poo at least once a day. If they don’t it’s important to talk to their doctor or your midwife. But as they grow into infanthood they will generally poo less, and some as little as once every 5 days. This change generally happens at around 2 months. So yes, not pooping for three days can be entirely normal. Similarly, if your baby continues to poop 11 times a day, that’s also perfectly normal.

So, generally speaking, not pooping every day is nothing to worry about! Even if they grunt and strain and their face turns as red as a tomato, so long as their poo is coming out soft and they seem to be happy and healthy, there’s very likely nothing to worry about.

Having said this, sometimes not pooping much occurs because a baby isn’t drinking enough or because there’s something hindering the poo from coming out. If you do suspect that either might be true, it’s a good idea to get in touch with your doctor.

Now, if their poo is coming out a little hard, is there anything that can be done?

Is there anything I can do to make pooping more comfortable for my baby?

If your baby’s poo often comes out hard, large or even looking like small rocks, or if they haven’t pooped in a few days and seem uncomfortable, you can try giving them an ounce or two of water, prune juice or pureed prunes. These natural remedies should help to soften the poo and make it easier to push out.

But are there any instances where it’s necessary to call a doctor?

When should I call a doctor?

Call your GP, health visitor, or paediatrician if you notice any of the following:

Your baby’s belly appears swollen.

Your baby starts vomiting.

Your baby develops a fever.

Your baby is exhausted and shows very little interest in feeding.

They are there to help and put your mind at ease.
