How does my baby grow at 14 weeks?

Your baby is around 8.5cm long, which is about the size of a kiwi fruit! Their head and body are now more in proportion to one another.

Your baby may also be doing something that you might find strange—having a wee! Amniotic fluid gets swallowed by your baby (only in small amounts!) and passes through the stomach, then the kidneys, then back out again as urine! Don’t worry; this is all perfectly natural, and your body is equipped to deal with it.

What are the pregnancy symptoms at 14 weeks?

As well as morning sickness and tiredness subsiding, you may find yourself with more energy than you’ve had in a while! Sleep will also be easier, as there’ll be fewer trips to the toilet during the night. This is because your womb is actually moving up into your belly, relieving pressure on your bladder. Your breasts will also feel less tender due to your pregnancy hormones stabilising.

What else do I need to know about being 14 weeks pregnant?

You may find yourself having bleeding gums or nosebleeds in your second trimester. This is because your pregnancy hormones have made your blood vessels weaker, yet the extra blood pumping around your body puts pressure on them. For example, if the inside of your nose is drying out, blood vessels are likely to break.

If you notice bleeding from your gums regularly, make sure you book in to see your dentist.

If a nosebleed begins, sit down and firmly pinch your nose, just above the nostrils. To prevent any blood from getting on the furniture or carpet, hold a tissue to your nostrils. While your instinct might be to tilt your head backwards, this is not recommended. Instead, lean forward and breathe through your mouth. That way, the blood drains from your nose and not down the back of your throat.

Do not lie down, as this will increase the pressure on the veins in your nose and encourage bleeding. You may have to continue pinching your nose for 10 to 15 minutes, so be patient and try to stay calm. Try not to pick or blow your nose, do strenuous exercise, drink hot drinks, or lie down for a short while after the bleeding has stopped.

Be gentle with your nose. Try not to blow it too hard or too often, and keep from picking at it. If your nose feels very dry, try a little vaseline around the nostrils to prevent soreness.

When should I see a doctor?

If a nosebleed hasn’t stopped after 20 minutes, call your doctor immediately. It’s also worth seeing a doctor if you are having frequent nosebleeds—by this, we mean more than once a week. You should also get to a hospital as soon as possible if any of the following take place:

There is blood pouring out of your mouth.

You are struggling to breathe because the flow is so heavy.

The blood in your mouth is causing you to vomit.

If any of those occur, then call an ambulance.

By this stage, you may have been invited to an appointment to see your midwife or obstetrician and have some blood tests taken. If you are being cared for by the UK’s National Health Service, you may also have had an infection screen to check for blood disorders such as anaemia, hepatitis B, or HIV. During your appointment, your midwife or obstetrician will discuss your general health, including whether you smoke or drink alcohol, and your emotional wellbeing to identify any support we can offer you.
