How does my baby grow at 19 weeks?

At 19 weeks, believe it or not, your baby is around 15.3cm long and weighs approximately 240g. That is around the size of a beef tomato.

Adult teeth are starting to grow (yes, adult teeth are growing in the womb!). All the while, they’re putting on weight and maturing at a rapid rate.

You may have an ultrasound scan around this time, where you might see your baby’s arms and legs moving and kicking!

Your baby’s senses are developing. Specialised areas of the brain are now developing nerve cells that will help them understand the world around them.

What are the pregnancy symptoms at 19 weeks?

You might notice you’re having difficulty sleeping or an ache in your lower belly. This is nothing to worry about and is caused by the round ligaments (the tissues holding your womb in place) stretching, which can cause aches and cramps.

It’s actually normal for the aches and cramps to occur on one side of the belly. This is because your womb is rotating to the right side of your body. For this reason, you’ll more than likely experience pain on your right side.

What else do I need to know about being 19 weeks pregnant?

To reassure you, there is no set amount of baby movements you should feel, but you may start to get a feel for your baby’s natural movement patterns around this stage. Once you start feeling movements, you should feel them right up until your baby is born. If you think your baby is moving less than usual or not moving at all, call your doctor.

If you find that exercises such as running become uncomfortable, it’s because the pregnancy hormone “relaxin” is loosening up your ligaments. This leaves your back, ankles, and knees without their usual support.
