How does my baby grow at 39 weeks?

At 39 weeks, you are almost there! Your baby is around 50.7cm (the size of a watermelon) and usually weighs between 3 and 4 kg.

Your baby’s skin has continued to develop. It's a tough, hard new layer that better protects their organs while regulating their temperature. Your baby’s lungs are now at their best to take on breathing in the outside world.

What are the pregnancy symptoms at 39 weeks?

As your due date gets closer, these final few days may feel longer than everything that has come before. You may be getting fed up waiting for your little one to finally make their appearance!

Don’t worry too much if your baby isn’t born exactly on its due date. Only 1 in 20 babies are born exactly when they’re expected. Most will arrive a week before or after.

You might experience a lot more discharge in your underwear. The discharge should be white and not smell like much. If it is yellow or bloody, that is called a “show.” This “show” is used to plug up your cervix while your baby is developing. Once it’s out, it can be the first sign your baby is on the way! However, it does not mean that labour is imminent, so don’t start reaching for the hospital bag just yet! Alternatively, you may also find your waters break before or after starting contractions.

Bleeding from your vagina.

Brown or pink discharge

Severe itching, especially at night,

Blurry vision or other problems relating to your sight

Extreme pain just below your ribs

Extremely swollen face, hands, ankles, or feet.

Feverish temperatures with no other cold or flu symptoms (around 37.5C)

Persistent headaches

Make sure you monitor your baby’s movements, and if you have any concerns, contact your doctor or midwife.
